A kitten in need of foster care made his way to Community Cat Club, a South Jersey-based animal rescue. The vet noticed that he had trouble breathing during his initial examination and that his chest was tilted.
The kitten was born with pectus excavatum, a sternum and rib cage deformity. Sara Sharp, the organization’s founder, brought him in so he could be closely watched while they looked for the right course of action for the deserving youngster.
Despite his handicap, the kitten, named Leroy, was an instant ball of excitement. He ran around and played as if nothing had occurred, refusing to let anything stop him.
They came to the conclusion that the kitten required urgent chest surgery after consulting with a specialist.
“Leroy’s illness was so severe that it seldom requires surgery and is not necessarily life-threatening. His heart was being pinned to one side of his chest and it was impeding his respiration “explained Sara.
