A cunning kitten steals a garbage truck, inspiring a heroic rescue effort

According to Samantha Ranlet, marketing communications specialist for SPCA of Wake County, “[a truck driver] explained that a kitten had hitched a ride deep in the structure of his recycling truck for a 10-mile ride… and then fled before he could grasp him.” The cat had jumped off a recycling truck, according to a different man who works in a nearby office building who notified rescuers.

With the help of numerous witnesses, SPCA Wake rescuers found the kitten, but it took some cajoling to get Evan to come out into the open.

A SPCA Wake rescuer named Kim said, “The tiny boy came out when he spotted us and the food, but kept his distance all day.” He would approach us within a few feet and meow and purr.

Evan did, however, toy with the thought of being captured but never fully gave in. Several rescuers attempted to lure Evan with food, but it also failed to work.

The SPCA of Wake County wrote on Instagram, “He kept just enough space that no one could catch him — but made sure to be close enough to taunt them.

Ranlet stated, “This gang of heroes dedicated themselves to catching him before he could walk off and disappear. Sometimes it takes a number of attempts over the course of days to catch a pet in need. He certainly experienced a wild day.
