A twelve-year-old tabby cat named Piggy was discovered by Network Rail engineers at Bebington station under the third track, a length of live electric rail that powers Merseyrail trains.
The dramatic rescue occurred after a member of the public noticed Piggy immobile and suspected the worst.
Network Rail’s Dave Huntingdon was assigned the arduous duty of removing what he thought was a dead cat – only to discover Piggy was very much alive.
Piggy is home and recovering from the near-cat-astrophe after spending more than a week at the vet.
Piggy’s owner, Lesley Jones, revealed, “We only moved into this place a few weeks before Piggy went missing.”
He left the house to explore his new surroundings and we didn’t see him for a few days, which was unusual, so when the vet called to say Piggy had been discovered, we were overcome with emotion.
“We were relieved he’d been located, but understandably concerned that he’d been hurt.”
“It’s been quite an adventure for him, and we’re overjoyed to have him back home following his time at the vet, where he was in an oxygen tent and on steroids.”
“I believe it’s safe to say he’s had his fair share of excitement for quite some time, and I’d like to thank Network Rail for saving him.”
