There are just about 116 of the extremely rare sand cat species left in the world. The last surviving sand cat at the park is Rotem, who resides at the Ramat Gan Safari Park in Israel. She was lamenting the loss of her partner.
Rotem’s new partner was supposed to be Kalahari, a new male sand cat that the team imported from Sweden in September, but Rotem wasn’t particularly interested in this anxious newcomer. For the most part, the two kept their distance from one another.
The staff learned one day that Rotem had given birth to a healthy litter of three kittens.
Everyone was in utter disbelief.
The Safari’s spokeswoman, Sigal Horowitz, said, “We had been really concerned. “Here, a full year earlier, we had made all of these efforts to match her, but nothing was happening. Sand cats are in a crucial period right now since they are not immortal.
The three gorgeous, priceless kittens that Rotem, the new mother, is raising, are well cared after.
