Ida Floreak, a painter in New Orleans, noticed a stray cat pacing around her yard in the early fall of last year. Salami, a small black cat, began visiting her home when it saw her cat relaxing on the back porch.
According to Floreak, “She came by and she really liked him.” She was more interested in him than he was in her, and they would occasionally sniff around each other. It was nice to see that it was obvious she had come to visit him.
Salami started appearing at Floreak’s house more frequently after she started laying food out for the cat. She was looking forward to free food and cuddling. Once the cat finally trusted her enough to accept food from her, Floreak was ecstatic.
Then Floreak noticed Salami was beginning to develop a small belly. The mother cat began to spend more time with Floreak once she became aware that she was expecting. My intention was to be able to bring her in for a fix and shots, Floreak added. But she was clearly pregnant before she felt at ease enough to do that.
